You Snooze You Lose?

February 4, 2024 | Supreeya S

later, tomorrow, procrastinate, snooze

People often say that thinking in extremes is unwise. They believe everything is a spectrum. There are many shades of gray between black and white.

But I realize that sometimes you do need to be dramatic with yourself. You have to simulate decisions between two polar opposites to facilitate breakthroughs. The question is when.

With things that are worth doing, what’s worse than being decisive is being flexible. Let’s say you want to start a side business. You have to ask yourself, what can you do NOW?

If it’s worth doing, it has to start now. Otherwise, you’re saying it’s not worth doing.

This might seem like you’re harsh to yourself. But really, you’re doing yourself a favor in the long run. And I don’t mean for you to be a flake and drop all your responsibilities to show up for what you want. I’m talking about as less as five minutes. That’s the least you owe yourself. Five minutes today for something that matters to you.

Can you truly say that you don’t have five minutes for something you want? For something you dream about? Really? Be honest with yourself.

If you don’t pick TODAY, then you should let yourself off the hook. You don’t want it. So let it go. Don’t eat up your brain’s processing power. There’s already so much for you to handle.

If it’s worth doing, there’s no reason to delay. Do you know what kills dreams? It’s inaction. Do you know what causes inaction? It’s not that people don’t want to do it or don’t dream of it. It’s that they think they can always do it “later.” Inaction is putting it off until tomorrow. All the tomorrows never become todays.

Stop hitting snooze on your dreams. Tomorrow, later, next time. These are all forbidden words. You should remove it from your dictionary. Later is a lie you tell yourself. It’s never the best time. You’re always going to think there’s a tomorrow. Until there’s not.

So it helps to think in extremes. It puts life into perspective. Now or never.

So what’s it going to be – a yes or no?
